Ways to protect yourself against identity theft
There are numerous ways to protect yourself against identity theft, and the more that you are willing to employ, the better protected you will end up being in the long run. Let us look at some of the available ways to protect yourself against identity theft and how you can use them to benefit.
1 – Purchase a shredder. This one is relatively self explanatory as one of the simplest ways to protect yourself against identity theft because you can shred anything you do not intend on keeping including invoices, old bills, receipts, bank statements and credit card statements to prevent people who are dumpster diving for identities from finding your information. Before you throw anything out, make sure it has no personal information on it, or shred it if it does.
2 – When you are using the ATM, another of the ways to protect yourself against identity theft involves making sure that no one is standing near or next to you. If someone is standing too close, either ask them to step back, or wait until they leave before you use the machine.
3 – Treat your checks as if they were ordinary cash. Why stuff your mailbox full of checks if you would not do the same thing for cold hard cash? Mail theft is significantly easier than dumpster diving when it comes to securing someone else’s private information. One of the best ways to protect yourself against identity theft is to drop your checks off directly at the post office rather than in a public mailbox.
4 – If you have to keep your credit card numbers, user names, passwords or bank information on hand, make sure that it is kept in a safe and private place as one of the ways to protect yourself against identity theft. Do not keep this information on a public place such as in a desk drawer or on your computer, because someone will find it if they are looking for it this way.
5 – One of the easiest ways to protect yourself against identity theft is to write “Ask for my ID” on the back of your credit and debit cards. Most people do not ask for ID when checking bank cards, so make sure to urge them to ask when you are using your cards so that they will prevent other people from potentially using your credit cards.
